It’s rumoured that the temple was built around AD 960, which means it has been around since the age of the Balinese Kingdom till today.Tirta Empul literally means “holy spring water” in Balinese, referring to the spring that supplies water to the many baths and pools throughout the complex. There are firm rules that go along with self-cleansing (“melukat” in Balinese), so please ensure that you are aware of the proper rituals before you go. You can consult either your guide or ask a temple authority for instructions. Don’t worry though, many tourists enter the temple for this holy experience so you won’t be alone.There are three types of cleaning. The first is cleansing oneself of evil spirits.
